Adult ADHD Reads
I thought it might be helpful to compile some of my favorite adult ADHD books. These are targeted at an older population of neurodivergent minds - it can be difficult to wade through the materials that are meant for younger kids (or for their parents). Here’s some of my favorite picks - in no particular order.
ADHD Reads
Driven to Distraction: Recognizing and Coping with Attention Deficit Disorder from Childhood to Adulthood by Edward M. Hallowell & John J. Ratey
ADHD 2.0: New Science and Essential Strategies for Thriving with Distraction - From Childhood to Adulthood by Edward M. Hallowell & John J. Ratey
Driven to Distraction is one of the most popular ADHD books of all time. While it does look at ADHD in childhood, it also follows ADHD throughout adolescence and adulthood. ADHD 2.0 is also a phenomenal read - it acts as an update to Driven to Distraction and talks about a lot of great methods for managing and understanding ADHD. If I had to pick one, I’d say ADHD 2.0 - just because it provides a more updated lens. But both are fantastic ADHD-centered books.
Thriving with Adult ADHD: Skills to Strengthen Executive Functioning by Phil Boissiere
Thriving with Adult ADHD is a great for those of you who may be saying, “I just want practical, actionable things I can do RIGHT NOW to help my executive functioning skills”. It’s a quick read that can be broken down into small, palatable chunks so you don’t feel the need to sit down and really dedicate a lot of time to reading - which can be difficult for adult ADHDers.
How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis
This one is less ADHD-specific, but helps tackle a huge issue that I talk about with ADHD adults all the time: managing your home and staying on top of your to-do list. The author has ADHD herself, so she has come up with some really brilliant ways to make your house work for YOU. I really like the message that “messiness is not a moral failing”. So many ADHDers have a strong sense of shame associated with executive dysfunction - and this book by KC Davis helps you step away from that shame and build a life that works better for you.
So what do we think - did I miss any good ones?
Comment with any that you think I should add to the list!
